Susan Njeri was going about her daily activities at their house in Karugia village, Murang'a county, on Tuesday, June 17, when her 22-year-old son, Boniface Kariuki, was shot by anti-riot police in Nairobi.
She had no idea what had happened to her firstborn child.
She did not receive the shocking news until the morning of Wednesday, June 18, when a relative called her.
Njeri lovingly refers to her son, who is in critical condition at Kenyatta National Hospital after the shooting incident, as Bonny.
"I nearly collapsed. Bonny is my only son. He was simply doing his job and was not doing anything wrong. Why would somebody want to do him harm?” she tearfully sobbed.
Kariuki's mum is devastated by the incident, and the distressed parent requested assistance from the government and well-wishers, stating that her family is unable to raise enough money to pay for her son's medical expenses.
Kariuki's father asked the government to take responsibility and ensure all the suspects are brought to book.
On Thursday, July 31, the High Court will rule on whether DP Kithure Kindiki is legitimately in office.
A three-judge panel consisting of Justices Eric Ogola, Anthony Mrima, and Freda Mugambi fixed the ruling date on Thursday, June 19.
This came after Kirinyaga woman representative Njeri Maina and MCA David Mathenge requested guidance on their applications submitted last year, contesting the impeachment of former DP Rigathi Gachagua.
On May 9, 2025, the Court of Appeal determined that three judges had been appointed to the cases irregularly and unlawfully.
Abdirahaman Jibril, an assistant director of investigations at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), has been summoned to explain the use of OCS Samson Talaam's phone to solicit donations from the general public.
Talaam is currently in custody as one of the suspects in the killing of teacher-blogger Albert Ojwang.
Jibril, who is investigating Ojwang's death, is scheduled to appear before Benmark Ekhubi, the senior principal magistrate of Milimani, today, June 20.
This comes after defence lawyer Cliff Ombeta claimed that he received a request for KSh 80,000 through Talaam’s number, supposedly for a 'financial emergency'.
Ombeta, along with fellow lawyers Felix Keyton, Stanley Kang’ahi, Danstan Omari, and Shadrack Wambui, raised the issue after the court denied Talaam’s bond request.
IPOA has finally grilled Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat regarding Ojwang's death.
This is almost two weeks after a public uproar erupted against the DIG, who was accused of ordering the blogger's torture while in custody for allegedly tarnishing his name.
Lagat, who was once surrounded by high-ranking officials, including IPOA chairman Isaack Hassan, in a contentious display of solidarity, found himself cornered.
He was questioned for hours about his involvement in the arrest and heinous murder of the blogger.
Lagat appeared humbled without the uniform and crown that gave him authority, much like Ojwang could have felt under the control of the officers under his command.
Controller of Budget (CoB) Margaret Nyakang'o has revealed that 30 counties spent over KSh 1 billion on foreign trips in the first nine months of the 2024/25 financial year.
The report exposes governors, county executives, and ward representatives as those who spent millions of public funds on job training, study tours, workshops, and conferences in foreign countries.
Nyakang'o raised questions on why these workshops and conferences were not held in towns and cities within the respective counties.
According to the report, Nairobi leads the list of counties that spent the most on foreign trips, where KSh 229.79 million was spent in just nine months.
Other counties that followed include Machakos (KSh 82 million), Lamu (KSh 76 million), Kitui (KSh 66 million), Mombasa (KSh 59.6 million), Nakuru (KSh 57 million), Nyeri (KSh 55.61 million), and Kisumu (KSh 51 million).
