The politician found himself in trouble after allegedly falling for an undercover police officer posing as a 17-year-old girl offering companionship services online.
Nur, who once vied for a parliamentary seat under Kenya’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, is among 12 men charged in Eden Prairie.
Fox News reports that they were arrested following a multi-agency operation targeting buyers of passion along the Interstate 494 corridor.
Authorities say the suspects believed they were arranging to meet a teenage girl for moments of passion, unaware that she was a decoy working with law enforcement.
The operation involved online advertisements for dating services, through which the undercover officer revealed she was underage, a fact that did not deter most of the men.
Nur, court documents reveal, was told the girl was “almost 18” and that her age could not be posted publicly.
Despite this, he proceeded to plan a meet-up and was arrested at a golf course with $250 and a cell phone in his possession.
The sting operation also netted suspects between the ages of 24 and 46, all from different areas of the Twin Cities.
Nine have so far been formally charged with attempting to engage in an affair with a minor.
One of the bizarre occurrences was that suspect Roberto Carlos Geronimo, 24, brought a bag of Sour Patch Kids as a “birthday present” after confirming he was okay with the girl being young.
Ross Orren Nordean, 25, attempted to flee the scene when officers moved in, crashing his vehicle into a tree with $940 in cash on him.
Eduardo Solis-Perez, 32, tried to evade arrest and was found with drugs, a packet of c*ndoms, and two phones.
Police say that all suspects had received texts confirming the undercover officer’s age and had responded in ways that showed awareness and intent to proceed regardless.
The arrest of Nur has caused shockwaves, particularly in Kenya, where his past political aspirations and affiliation with the ruling UDA party have drawn intense scrutiny.
As of now, there has been no official comment from UDA or Kenyan authorities regarding his arrest.
Law enforcement officials in Minnesota say the operation was part of an ongoing effort to combat the misuse of minors in the region.
Additional investigations are underway, and more charges could be filed.
