The Deputy Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department, Kennedy Thiong’o, has urged Kenyans living in various parts of the country to brace for moderate to heavy rains this week.
Thiong'o, while addressing members of the public on Monday evening, said rainfall was expected over several parts of the country from Tuesday this week to Monday next week.
According to Thiong'o, rain in the Highland East counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi would begin in the afternoon and extend into the night.
Mornings in the aforementioned counties were likely to be cloudy, with light rains over a few places, giving way to sunny intervals before heavy rains in the afternoon that would be accompanied by thunderstorms.
In the Lake Victoria basin and the Rift Valley region, heavy rains were projected in the counties of Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia and Uasin-Gishu.
A similar weather pattern was also expected in Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori and Narok Counties.
While most counties were forecasted to experience heavy downpours, the Kenya Met boss noted that the Coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale would receive moderate rains, particularly in the morning hours.
In the advisory, Thiong’o also warned the residents of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi to brace for very cold nights for the next seven days.
According to him, night temperature in these counties was expected to drop up to 10°C for the initial days of the forecast period before rising marginally to 11°C for the rest of the days.
On the other hand, daytime temperatures of more than 30°C would be experienced in much of the Coast, North-eastern and Northwestern Kenya.
Counties in these regions include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale.
