The No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft delivered a sensational performance on Wednesday night, pouring in a career-high 35 points in the Dallas Wings’ 93-88 loss to the Phoenix Mercury. Despite the defeat, Paige Bueckers looked sharp after missing nearly two weeks due to concussion protocol and a bout with illness.
In just her ninth WNBA game, the former UConn star shot a blistering 13-of-19 from the field, including 5-of-7 from deep — showing no signs of rust despite the layoff.
But while her offensive brilliance lit up the box score, Bueckers admitted postgame that her conditioning and communication were still catching up.
“Felt a little winded coming back from a break, and I feel like I could have used my voice more,” she told reporters. “Been more disruptive. Crashed the glass more. I feel good, feels good to be healthy for the most part. Basketball is a game that I love and this is a group that I love to be around, so to be back out there felt great.”
Now sitting at 1-9, the Wings are searching for answers. But even as a rookie, Bueckers has already begun embracing a leadership role — both vocally and by example.
“Just trying to lead by example,” she said. “Lead with my voice and just have difficult conversations. Get to know these people on and off the court. … Like anything in life, it’s a journey and a process.”

Up next, the Wings face a major challenge against A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces. While the defending champs haven’t been as dominant as expected this year, they’re still a powerhouse — and a tough test for any team, let alone one riding a five-game skid.

Still, if Paige Bueckers’ return game is any indication, Dallas has a rising star capable of sparking a turnaround. Her poise, production, and leadership might just be what the Wings need to climb out of their early-season slump.
