The Kashmir Valley is currently experiencing widespread snowfall since early morning, disrupting normal life and travel. The intense winter period, locally known as Chillai Kalan, continues to dominate the weather conditions in the Valley. This 40-day phase of extreme cold, which began in December, is known for its sub-zero temperatures, snowfall, and frozen water bodies. Chillai Kalan is set to come to an end on January 30. After the end of Chillai Kalan, the region can expect a gradual improvement in weather conditions.
As per weather reports, dry conditions are expected across the Valley until January 19, with no significant changes expected. While Jammu experienced a partly cloudy sky earlier, with a hint of sunshine in the afternoon on Thursday. Travellers who are planning to visit or those who are already there, authorities have visitors to exercise caution due to slippery roads and other road blocks due to fresh snowfall.
The Jammu-Baramulla rail link is a lifeline for many, offering an affordable and efficient way to travel through the Valley. Railway officials assured that snow-clearing operations are underway and services will be restored promptly. Travellers are advised to stay informed about the changing weather, and the re-opening of the railway tracks.
