The protests were sparked by the gruesome murder of a young girl who had sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2024.
Wanjiku was assaulted and stabbed to death at her home, where her mother, Judy Muchoki, discovered her body after returning from work.
Following the shocking incident, residents took to the streets to demand justice for the teenager. However, the protests quickly turned chaotic, prompting the deployment of police officers to restore order. Some officers, however, reportedly used excessive force to disperse the crowd.
A chilling video shows one officer taking out his pistol, pulling the trigger, and then fleeing the scene on a motorbike.
The bullet allegedly struck Joshua, who was running away after police threw teargas at the protesters during the chaos.
Sadly, Joshua did not survive. Some claim the officer appeared intentional in his actions.
The officer was seen facing the direction of the crowd when he fired, moments before hopping on the boda boda.
Another officer joined him, and the rider sped away with both men aboard.
Helpless screams could be heard in the background as residents scrambled to find safety.
The footage, which has since gone viral, sparked outrage among Kenyans, who condemned the reckless and unjustified use of firearms by police.
Valentino Hillsong Frank:
"And he is proud to have a ring on his finger—meaning he looks forward to having kids, if he doesn’t already have one."
Pedro Kiplangat:
"So you don't see the lives of officers being pelted with stones? Officers of the law are allowed to use their firearms if their lives are in danger."
Sanjrn Elkos:
"Unless police move around without guns like traffic officers, their training involves using firearms as a defense mechanism when they feel threatened."
John Ngigi:
"He will stand before the court alone. The seniors he was trying to impress won’t defend him. In fact, they won’t even remember him. He’ll likely end up in prison."
Willy Roy Awishe:
"Peaceful demonstration doesn’t mean you have to go to the streets and provoke police, expecting them to kiss you. People can choose to stay home, close shops, and create a complete shutdown of economic activity."
