In a statement issued by his office on Sunday, May 18, the cancer was confirmed following a medical review.
Biden had seen a doctor the previous week after experiencing persistent urinary symptoms.
“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterised by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the statement read.
A gleason score of 9 means its the most aggresive form of prostate cancer.
While the diagnosis points to a serious and advanced form of cancer, his doctors noted that the disease appears to be hormone-sensitive.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” the statement added.
Biden and his family are currently exploring available treatment options in consultation with his medical team.
Shortly after the announcement, former President Barack Obama took to social media to express his support for Biden and his family.
“Michelle and I are thinking of the entire Biden family. Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace. We pray for a fast and full recovery,” Obama wrote.

Here are some messages of support from the people to the former president:
"Incredibly sad. Agree or disagree with his politics, he always struck me as a decent man. Best wishes to him and his family."
"While I don’t support his policies nor am I a supporter of his, this is not personal but about principles. I will pray for him and hope he can overcome this aggressive illness."
"I'm deeply sorry to hear about this diagnosis. In a most personal level, he may feel overwhelmed, or even scared, — his emotions are valid. The world loves Joe Biden, so he’s not alone in this; he should lean on loved ones, medical teams, or support groups when he’s ready. He should take things one step at a time, and give himself grace. Wishing him the very best of prayers, strength, and God’s care."
"Wishing him strength in the fight ahead. Politics aside, no one deserves to battle this kind of pain. Let’s hope for access to the best care and a recovery that defies the odds."
