Jay Bilas Names Major College Basketball Program That Is 'Peaking At The Right Time'
The 2025 NCAA Tournament tips off on Tuesday in Dayton with two First Four matchups between No. 16 St. Francis (PA) vs. No. 16 Alabama State and No. 11 North Carolina vs. No. 11 San Diego State. The action continues on Wednesday with two more games before the Round of 64 gets underway on Thursday.
Meanwhile, several college basketball teams finished the regular season on a high note and maintained their momentum up to this point. That is important at this time of year, as teams want to play their best basketball at the right time.
On Monday, ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas joined "The Paul Finebaum Show" and named the Florida Gators as a team that is "peaking at the right time."
"They’re an impressive group, and they’re, I think, peaking at the right time," Bilas said. “And it may seem trendy, but I think people are just reacting to what they see when you watch them beat Tennessee. It was methodical."
Florida enters the NCAA Tournament with a record of 30-4, having won six straight games, with the final one in the SEC Championship Game. What makes it even more impressive is the fact that each of those victories came over NCAA Tournament teams seeded six or higher: Texas A&M (4 seed), Alabama x2 (2 seed), Ole Miss (6 seed), Missouri (6 seed) and Tennessee (2 seed).
Bilas mentioned that a couple of weeks ago, he said Florida was the best team in the country.
"I said a couple of weeks ago that I thought they were the best team in the country, and the way they’re playing right now, the pieces that they have and how well they mesh together," Bilas added.
Bilas then pointed out the Gators' depth in both the frontcourt and backcourt.
"They’ve got four legitimate big guys that are really good that could start anywhere, and they just shuffle them in and out," Bilas stated. "They offensive rebound, they protect the rim... They screen off help extraordinarily well. I don’t know that there’s anyone that may have a group of guards that are as good as Florida’s. I’m not sure anybody’s got anybody better than those four guards, and then you put Urban Klavzar in as the fifth — that’s a tough combo there. And those guys can all score, they can all defend. Will Richard and Alijah Martin get a lot of steals.”
No. 1 seed Florida kicks off its NCAA Tournament run in the West Region on Friday, facing No. 16 seed Norfolk State in the Round of 64. Tip-off is set for 6:50 p.m. ET.
