The Gaza cease-fire is now complete—or is it? Israel didn’t return to war Sunday, meaning Hamas is getting free days of quiet without releasing more hostages. But U.S. and Israeli pressure is increasing.
The past six weeks were called “phase one” of the deal. Israel ransomed 33 hostages for nearly 2,000 terrorists and security prisoners, and it withdrew from most but not all of Gaza. We were skeptical there would be a “phase two,” and talks never got off the ground as Hamas refused to disarm or give up control. By the deal’s terms, affirmed by the U.S., this gives Israel the right to resume fighting.
