Irish Love Islander suffers savage first coupling in villa

Published 3 weeks ago3 minute read

Love Island made its big return on Monday and kicked off by taking a little inspiration from another hit dating show.

With 12 singletons entering the Mallorcan villa on the hunt for love, it was never going to stay chill for long, and for one of the Irish Islanders, it wasn't the strongest start.

In a new twist for 2025, the ladies got to choose who they'd like to couple up with first but in true Love Island fashion... all was not as straightforward as it seemed.

Instead of the Islanders meeting during the entrance and then deciding who they'd like to be in a couple with, or being put together by the public like in previous years, the ladies picked blind.

Taking inspiration from Love Is Blind, the girls didn't get to see the lads before they took a chance on them and instead had to read the boys' dating profiles that had been printed and put on stands.

They then stood next to the stand that had the description of their dream man on paper, with it not ending too well for some of them.

Helena Ford, 29, panicked over where to stand and ended up with 23-year-old Irish rugby player Conor Phillips, 23, when she really wanted to couple up with Harry Cooksley, 30.

Host Maya Jama looked shocked by Helena's choice and said: 'Helena, you're with Conor, I thought you didn't like rugby players?' Ouch.

Helena agreed, replying: 'I know but nobody else wants to swap, does anyone want to swap? I don't want the 23-year-old he's a bit to young though.'

Looking over at Sophie, who decided to couple up with Harry who Helena had her eye on, she added: 'No you keep Harry, it's fine we can swap later on.'

Sophie agreed, joking that they can 'touch base' and maybe even stage 'a handover tonight.'

Helena did say she'd give Conor a chance, how nice of her, but in fairness, he later admitted that he doesn't usually go for blondes so we're not too confident their match is written in the stars.

Viewers loved the new start to the season, with one writing: 'I love how they are pairing the couples this year! Love is blind but make it Love Island.'

'thought I wouldn’t like this dating profile coupling up method but it’s making me giggle a little. It’s so awkward and I love it,' added another.

And a third person said: 'The dating profile twist for the coupling up on Love Island is way better I prefer that, it’s boring them always normally going for who they fancy physically that twist can stay.'

Fingers crossed things look up for Conor as the week goes on!
