“Head Over Heels” is directed by Kim Yong-wan and written by Yang Ji-hoon.
In an interview with Manila Bulletin and other Asian media outlets, Cho Yi-hyun and Choo Young-woo talked about their reunion, chemistry and what “Head Over Heels” is all about.
“Head Over Heels” is a reunion between the two. They starred together in the teen romance series “School 2021.”
Choo Young-woo said Cho Yi-hyun’s appearance hasn’t changed since while she said he has a good build now compared to before.
“First off, when we reunited this time around, I was so blown away by how, appearance-wise, she hadn't changed a bit. It was really amazing. And internally, she had grown so much as an actor. It was so nice to go into production knowing each other, because I know her style of acting. I know what she likes and doesn't like, so I think it was much easier for us to get the hang of it,” said Choo Young-woo.
In response, Cho Yi-hyun said, “As for Young-woo here, when I met him after several years, I was amazed by how he had matured, both internally and externally.”
“Because as far as I remember, back when we were working on ‘School 2021,’ I remember him as being really thin, but now he has such a good build and looks much more mature. I was amazed by how someone could transform so much over several years. Also, it was so nice to work with a friend because we're the same age, and since we have experience of working together before, it was really reassuring to have him around. We felt really comfortable around each other,” she said about him.

Roles
According to Cho Yi-hyun, “first love” for Seong-A, her character, “is just how hard her heart was pounding when she first saw him. So, love at first sight.”
Choo Young-woo explained, “I think it's the first person that comes to mind when you hear the word ‘first love,’ even when a long time has passed.”
Seong-A is a student and a shaman (someone who performs rituals). To prepare for the role, Cho Yi-hyun said a real shaman provided help.
“We had an advisor, a real shaman, who helped me practice these shamanic rituals called ‘Gut’ in Korean. I practiced a lot, and I watched a lot of videos, and also there are certain spells or phrases that shamans use when they perform these rituals so I really tried to narrate them and rehearse them again and again so that I would get used to them. Looking back now, I remember them being really tricky,” she said.
Choo Young-woo described his character Gyeon-U “as a boy who is haunted by bad luck, but who still tries his best to live life in an easygoing manner. And I think that quality that he has is quite similar to me, because I also consider myself to have an easygoing personality. I'm not that jumpy, and I don’t get flustered easily. And you know, in that regard, I think we have some commonalities.”
The two said they enjoyed filming “Head Over Heels” as they were very comfortable with each other.
“I think the chemistry was equally great both on and off set, because we have worked with each other before, and we felt really comfortable around each other. Personally, I’m quite an introverted person, so usually I need some time in the beginning to get to know people that I meet for the first time. But this time around, there was no need for that because we knew each other all along. So it was really nice,” said Cho Yi-hyun to which Choo Young-woo replied, “The chemistry was just amazing.”
Cho Yi-hyun said the script was an important factor in her decision to accept the project.
“First off, the script was so fascinating - I was hooked right away. And the script also came along when I was really into shamanism, so it just felt like it was destiny. Also, Seong-A is a character who has a double life, so I was confident that if I could pull off this character, I would have a lot to learn and take away,” she said.
For Choo Young-woo, the romance angle between the two main characters was interesting.
“I thought that the original webtoon dealt with a really fascinating subject matter which is a romance between a girl who is a student by day and a shaman by night, and a boy who only has limited time to live. So the whole romance between these two main characters was really hooking. And I also thought that the overall vibe of the series is really endearing and adorable. You know, healing, therapeutic shows are really in these days, so I joined with the excitement that this would be the case,” he said.
Message
Cho Yi-hyun and Choo Young-woo said viewers should look forward to watching “Head Over Heels” because it is a combination of several genres.
“I believe that the standout element of our show is that, unlike other dramas, ‘Head Over Heels’ is a one-of-a-kind series that blends multiple genres together. What’s more, these multiple genres, they're not all over the place. They all perfectly fall into place. So I think that makes ‘Head Over Heels’ really special,” she said.
Choo Young-woo said the subject matter and action scenes will fascinate viewers.
He said, “I think the fact that the female lead character is a student during the day and has a different occupation by night is very special in itself. What’s more, that other occupation is a shaman, which makes this series one-of-a-kind, indeed. The subject matter of the show is really new and fascinating. And on top of that, you get to see a lot of action as well, because I do archery, and shoot a lot of arrows. Plus, there are scenes where we talk to ghosts and take down ghosts really fiercely. I hope you would look forward to that as well.”
Overall, the message of the series is having faith in one’s choices.
Cho Yi-hyun said, “I just want to say to all the people who are watching, to have faith in their choices. If you believe in your choice and push through all the way, it’s always going to be the right path for you. And I think, not just the characters, but the overall theme of the show is really centered on love, so I hope that the viewers would also get to feel that love in their hearts as well.”
“I actually don't believe in destiny. I believe that every person creates their own fate by making one choice after another. Every person's fate lies in their own hands. It's theirs to create. Also, it's always such a blessing to have people around you to support you and to care for you along the way. You know, in that regard, I think Gyeon-U is a really blessed person because he has such a great ally beside him,” said Choo Young-woo.
“Head Over Heels” will debut on Prime Video on June 23.
