The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has invited the emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, over an alleged infraction against the ban on Eid-el-Fitr Sallah Durbar.
In a letter of invite dated 4th of April, 2025, signed by a Commissioner of Police, operations at the Police Force Intelligent Department (FID), CP Olajide Rufus Ibitoyo asked Sanusi to appear at the FID headquarters, Abuja on Tuesday, 8th, 2025 for investigation.
The invitation letter sighted by The Guardian is connected to an initial invite and interrogation slammed on one of the traditional title holders by the Kano police commissioner over an alleged violation of the Durbar ban.
About 48 hours before the Eid-el-Fitr Sallah celebration, the police authority in Kano imposed a ban on Sallah Durbar, citing security intelligence of the possibility of the activities being hijacked by hoodlums to perpetrate unrest in the city.
The police prohibited horse rides, car races, and reckless driving in the city and threatened to deal ruthlessly against violators of the order.
In compliance with the police directive, Sanusi announced the cancellation of all preparations for Sallah Durbar in compliance with the police.
There is apprehension that the emir’s invitation will not trigger a demonstration from support groups in Kano.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Kano State Government over the development proved abortive as Commissioner for Information, Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya, could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.
