Taiwo Awoniyi in Coma after Surgery

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine sustained during the team's 2-2 draw with Leicester City. The 27-year-old collided with the goalpost while attempting to reach a cross, initially trying to play on despite the injury. However, further medical evaluation revealed the severity of his condition, leading to urgent abdominal surgery.

Following the surgery, Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma to limit his movement and regulate his heart rate. While his condition is serious, it is understood not to be life-threatening. Nottingham Forest released a statement indicating that Awoniyi is "recovering well," and further updates will be provided as they become available.

The incident has prompted widespread concern and support from the football community. Former and current teammates, fans, and journalists have all sent messages of encouragement. Super Eagles, Ahmed Musa, and Rasheedat Ajibade have expressed their support, with Ajibade sharing a heartfelt message and urging prayers for Awoniyi and his family. Awoniyi's former club, Union Berlin, also conveyed their best wishes for a swift recovery.

Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has also joined in praying for Awoniyi, acknowledging his positive impact on his community and his commitment to uplifting others. The governor praised Awoniyi as a footballer and philanthropist, wishing him a speedy recovery.

The injury has also reignited discussions regarding VAR protocols. Critics argue that the delay in raising the offside flag, designed to ensure accurate VAR review, can expose players to unnecessary risks, as highlighted by Awoniyi’s injury, where Anthony Elanga was initially in an offside position before the collision occurred.

Following the game, reports emerged of Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis confronting head coach Nuno Espírito Santo. However, the club has denied these claims, stating that Marinakis’s actions stemmed from concern for Awoniyi’s condition and frustration that the medical team allowed him to continue playing despite visible pain.

Victor Osimhen, Awoniyi's Super Eagles teammate, has also offered prayers for his recovery. Sharing a scripture on his Instagram Story, Osimhen expressed his support and continued prayers for Awoniyi's full recovery. Both players were part of Nigeria's victorious 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup squad.
