I Need The MCU To Give These 10 Marvel Heroes A Major Power Upgrade

Published 8 hours ago8 minute read

Marvel has produced some of the best superheroes in comics, but it's time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to step up their game and power up these iconic heroes. The MCU has introduced dozens of heroes to their shared universe, but the power scale varies greatly.

While the last 17 years has produced some extraordinarily powerful characters like Wanda Maximoff, and Captain Marvel, there are a lot of characters who appear to have had their powers downgraded for the big screen.

However, with Sentry joining the cast, and characters like Franklin Richards, it's time to reassess how powerful these heroes are, and make adjustments accordingly. After all, these superheroes have done some truly spectacular things in the comics.

Smart Hulk looks shocked in Avengers Endgame

One of the most obvious examples of a character whose power has been diluted in the MCU is Hulk. Since his initial appearance in The Incredible Hulk, and the subsequent redesign in The Avengers, Bruce Banner and his alter ego have changed a lot.

All Marvel's Avengers, Ranked By Threat Level

The MCU has introduced a litany of immensely powerful Avengers throughout Phases 1-3, but which of Earth’s Mightiest poses the biggest threat?

Namely, the two merged to create the so-called Smart Hulk. Unfortunately, despite having the body of Hulk, Banner appears unable or unwilling to push it to its physical limits and do anything all that impressive. This is a significant departure from comics and one that needs to be corrected.

Hulk is a goliath in the comics, and his power has led to this hero challenging many of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. However, if Banner can't access that deeper strength, he doesn't stand a chance with new threats like Doctor Doom.

Kate Bishop and Clint Barton firing arrows in Hawkeye

Clint Barton is an interesting hero, because, inherently, he isn't all that super. Yes, he is an elite spy, and a highly skilled agent of SHIELD, when the organization was still in operation, but he's just a man.

But that shouldn't be a limiting factor considering the other ordinary mortals in the Avengers lineup, like Black Widow and Iron Man. Clint and Natasha are closer in their power levels, but even she manages to pull off some incredible feats of heroism while Clint is largely sidelined.

Now, with Kate Bishop taking over the reins as Hawkeye, it's time to see her step up to the hero role in a much more significant way. Using a variety of special arrows, and getting into the thick of the action, and even putting her outstanding intelligence to good use. Bishop has a chance to be truly great.

Dane Whitman considering touching the Ebony Blade in Eternals

Dane Whitman first arrived in Eternals, played by the incredible Kit Harrington. While the movie barely acknowledges his potential as a superhero by including a post-credits scene where he claims a powerful magic sword, his comic book alter ego is legendary.

10 MCU Movies That Are Amazing From Start To Finish

Several Marvel Cinematic Universe movies contain exciting reveals, action scenes, and characters from start to finish, and these are the best.

As the Black Knight, Whitman is a magically enhanced superhero. Descended from a long line of heroes, Whitman wields his enchanted sword and fights evil on every front. While the Eternals may be gone, Whitman is still on Earth, and his story in the MCU should be expanded further.

Kamala Khan discovering her mutation in Ms. Marvel

Kamala Khan was introduced in Ms. Marvel, and she made quite the impression. As a die-hard fangirl of Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, Kamala gives the impression of being just a regular kid, but when she receives a magical bangle, she taps into her mutant powers.

Kamala returned in The Marvels, where she got the chance to fight alongside her idol, but it appears that her powers are still closely tied to her enchanted accessory. This is not typical for mutants, and it certainly isn't how the character works in the comics.

It would be great to see Kamala hone her skills, and expand her powers beyond standard light manipulation. If she accessed powers more similar to her comic book counterpart, or at least was able to control them without the bangle, that would be a major improvement.

Phyla as a new member of the Guardians of the Galaxy in Vol. 3

Phyla was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as another experiment of the High Evolutionary. Phyla is a hyper-evolved fish person, who gains several standard enhanced powers like durability, speed, and strength, in addition to energy manipulation.

The MCU has had a string of incredible successes when it comes to several castings throughout the history of the franchise, which shaped the stories.

However, in the comics, her story is very different. Phyla is actually a character who is imbued with the powers of the original Mar-Vell, the same hero who powered up Carol Danvers.

Phyla has a lot of potential to tap into, and potentially a way to connect her story with Captain Marvel's, but either way, she needs an upgrade in the MCU.

Thunderbolts' Ava Starr a.k.a. Ghost wears her original costume in Ant-Man and the Wasp

Ava Starr is one of the most tragic characters in the MCU. She lost both her parents in a lab accident, which also desynchronized her from reality. Now, she phases between the quantum realm and reality.

While she was initially taken in by SHIELD to help her control her condition, she was used by the corrupt undercover HYDRA agents as a weapon and a mercenary. Now, years later, she appears to be slightly more stable, but her powers still require careful manipulation.

Fortunately, as a New Avenger, Ava may have access to more resources and support than ever before when her missions were in the shadows. Hopefully the character will see a suitable bump in her powers and capabilities.

Adam Warlock in the gold Sovereign ship in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Adam Warlock was teased all the way back at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, the character only recently debuted in the long-awaited sequel.

In the comics, Adam is one of the most impressive heroes in the Multiverse, and a significant part of the Infinity War saga who manages to put Thanos in his place. However, the movies took the character and his narrative in a different direction.

The MCU has seen its list of villains grow over the last two decades, but more interestingly, these characters have changed a lot themselves.

Adam should be so much more powerful in the MCU, and with bigger threats ready to attack, it's time to step his powers up sooner rather than later. Not to mention, Will Poulter is a brilliant casting choice, and a more powerful Adam Warlock is likely to stick around in the MCU for longer.

Vanessa looking confused in 2018's Deadpool 2

Morena Baccarin recently joined the MCU in Deadpool & Wolverine, continuing her role from the previous Fox X-Men movies. However, Vanessa Carlysle has a lot more to offer the MCU than what has been shown so far.

In Marvel Comics, Vanessa is a powerful mutant with the ability to shapeshift. While this is true in the comics, the movies have done absolutely nothing with this idea to date, despite casting an incredible talent in the role.

The MCU could fix that, either by triggering Vanessa's mutant genes, or introducing a variant who could explore this character in the MCU, uninhibited by the past events of the Fox movies.

Wong looking quizzical in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Wong is an incredible character who has stolen audiences' hearts since he appeared in the original Doctor Strange. And, after the disappearance of his dear friend Stephen Strange for five years during the blip, he stepped up to become the Sorcerer Supreme.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is full of powerful villains that vary wildly in strength, from tyrannical mutant leaders to literal cosmic deities.

While it can be easily argued that Strange should be reinstated, clearly the traditions of the Mystic Arts don't support this idea. But if that's the case, then Wong should clearly be more impressive than he is now.

It's not to say he isn't a great sorcerer, but right now, he seems barely above average, especially when appearing next to the legend that is Doctor Strange.

Official Sentry concept art for Marvel Studios Thunderbolts*

Bob Reynolds recently debuted in the MCU in Thunderbolts*. However, in the comics, he is universally known as the hero Sentry. Sentry is among Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and one that has a strong connection to other heroes throughout the universe.

But, the MCU has altered the characters' origin story to highlight the danger of Sentry's alter-ego, Void. Void is no doubt a terrifying monster, and one whose powers could threaten the human race as a whole, but that shouldn't mean Bob steps down from being the hero Sentry entirely.

Bob appears scared to tap into his powers right now, but in the next couple of movies, the MCU needs to see this character gain some confidence, and at least manage to control some parts of his powers. Otherwise, what was the point in introducing Sentry to the only to power him down?
