House Of Representatives Orders Nigerian Army To Release Report On Okuama Killings | Sahara Reporters
The resolution was passed following a motion sponsored by Rep. Francis Waive during plenary on Monday, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Army to release its investigation report on the killing of 17 soldiers in Okuama Community, Ughelli South, Delta State, on March 14, 2024.
The resolution was passed following a motion sponsored by Rep. Francis Waive during plenary on Monday, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
The lawmakers also urged the military to either release detained innocent community members or charge them to court.
Also, they called for the rebuilding of homes destroyed in the aftermath of the tragic incident.
To ensure compliance, the House mandated its Committee on Defence to oversee the matter and report back within four weeks.
In his motion, Waive lamented that a year after the incident, detained community members remained in military custody without trial or bail.
He also criticized the failure to initiate a judicial inquiry, emphasizing that the Army’s internal investigation should have been concluded by now.
In a separate motion, the House condemned the increasing cases of killings, kidnappings, and violent crimes in Esan North-East and Esan South-East Federal Constituency of Edo State.
The motion, sponsored by Rep. Prince Henry Odianosen Okojie, prompted the House to direct security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, and Police, to conduct an intensive investigation to curb the rising violence.
Lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to establish a military base in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, to strengthen security and improve response capabilities.
The House further assigned its committees on Defence, Army, National Security and Intelligence, Police, and Legislative Compliance to monitor implementation and report back within four weeks.
