Hornets GM sets the record straight after NBA Draft lottery

The ping-pong balls didn’t bounce in Charlotte’s favor, but inside the Hornets’ front office, there’s no panic—only preparation.

The Hornets landed the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, dashing any dreams of capturing top prospect Cooper Flagg. But according to new President of Basketball Operations Jeff Peterson, the team’s draft board is still rich with talent.

“This is a deep draft,” Peterson said during his media availability following the lottery results. “Obviously, everyone is competitive and wants to win the lottery, but at the same time, this is what we all do our work for.”

Peterson, who joined the organization earlier this year after successful stints in Brooklyn and Atlanta, emphasized that the Hornets have done their homework—and that fans should trust the process.

“We’re really excited,” Peterson continued. “It’s top-heavy, but I also think there’s going to be some good players spread all throughout. I’m excited that we have three total picks in this draft.”

Charlotte’s front office now turns its attention to evaluating potential fits at No. 4. Most projections have the Hornets eyeing a trio of elite guard prospects: Baylor’s VJ Edgecombe, Texas standout Tre Johnson, or Duke sharpshooter Kon Knueppel. If forward Ace Bailey unexpectedly drops, he could become a serious option.

Peterson also addressed the emotional toll of waiting for draft positioning, and how knowing their place—just outside the top three—changes the conversation.

“Clarity definitely helps,” he said. “Up until this moment, there was just a ton of anxiety… but now that we know we’ll be picking fourth, it’ll help clear some things up in terms of just conversations with other teams and continue the process.”

The Hornets haven’t had a playoff appearance since 2016, and their fan base is eager for a fresh start. While the team missed out on the top prize, Peterson’s message is clear: they’re confident, prepared, and ready to find the next cornerstone for the franchise.
