Heavy rain: NDRF team stationed in Valparai; more than 40 relief camps set up in Coimbatore district | Coimbatore News - Times of India
Coimbatore: In the wake of heavy rain forecast, a 30-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been stationed in Valparai while an 80-member State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team –- that has been divided into two groups – has been deployed in Pollachi and other areas, said Coimbatore district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar on Saturday.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain in Coimbatore district until May 26. In response, Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation managing director and Coimbatore district monitoring officer Krantikumar Pati reviewed the precautionary measures taken by various departments for the southwest monsoon. On Saturday, he visited the Integrated Command and Control Centre in RS Puram and instructed corporation staff members to promptly act on complaints regarding waterlogging received through the corporation’s official social media handles.Due to the possibility of heavy rain in Valparai, Krantikumar Pati held a review meeting online with officials from various departments. Later, he inspected the district emergency control room set up at the collector’s office.After the review meeting, the collector told reporters that discussions had been held on addressing rain-related damage and deployment of motor pumps to remove stagnant water.
“People are advised to report rain-related emergencies to the helpline number 1077,” he said.
“More than 40 relief camps have been set up in Coimbatore district. Arrangements, including 43 generators, 100 earthmovers and 50 water tankers, are in place. The district administration has taken all precautionary measures to prevent damage and ensure public safety,” he added.Due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas, the water level in the Siruvani dam rose by one foot on Friday. The water level was 19.02 feet on Saturday.
The full reservoir level is 49.53 feet.The forest department on Saturday announced that the Kovai Kutralam falls would be temporarily closed due to heavy rain in its catchment areas in the Western Ghats. Boluvampatti forest range officer Suseendranath said the water inflow drastically increased after heavy rainfall in Kovai Kutralam and surrounding areas. Tourists are not allowed to bathe in the falls.According to data from the District Disaster Management Authority, the district recorded 497.48 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 7.30 am on Saturday.
