TOKYO, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Japan's weather agency on Sunday warned of heavy rain with thunder in eastern Japan and some other regions.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said warm and damp air flowing into a low-pressure system accompanied by a front over the Sea of Japan has caused rain clouds to develop over Tokai, Kanto and Tohoku regions.

Localized heavy rain of more than 30 millimeters per hour with thunder is expected in eastern Japan where the front is expected to pass over, the JMA said.

In the hour to 6 a.m. local time, 61 millimeters of downpours per hour were observed in Shimada City in Shizuoka Prefecture, where some areas have issued landslide warnings, the agency added.

Meanwhile, the rain has let up in Kyushu in southwestern Japan, but it may intensify again through Tuesday, possibly bringing downpours.

Weather officials called on people to be on the alert for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers.
