After successfully pushing for former Chief Justice David Maraga to declare his interest in the 2027 presidential contest, lawyer Nelson Havi now says that Kenyans need to look for a competent woman to deputise him.

Taking to his official X account on Monday, March 31, 2025, Havi urged the Gen Zs to help him identify the woman whom he says should be a professional who is competent, vocal, virtuous and vibrant.

The former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president has vouched for justice activist Jerotich Seii to deputise Maraga in the 2027 presidential race that will pit President William Ruto against several other candidates that have since declared their interests.

Havi has invited views from Kenyans on his choice, which is expected to draw mixed reactions considering Seii’s previous relationship with Kenya Kwanza administration, with Ruto’s economic advisor David Ndii recently leaking a WhatsApp conversation between him and the activist, in what she appeared to have been seeking some favours such as consideration for a state job.

“We now need a competent, vocal, virtuous, and vibrant woman (a professional, for that matter) to deputize David Maraga in the race for president in 2027. GenZote, can we start the discussion? Why not Jerotich Seii?” Havi stated.

Maraga has said he will be on the ballot in the 2027 presidential election, months after Havi kicked off an online campaign to compel him to come out and vie against Ruto, a call that received the backing of the Gen Z.

Speaking on Sunday, March 30, 2025, in Kisii after a church service, Maraga said he is ready to offer himself for the top job from where he will be able to initiate change.

The former CJ was, however, quick to point out that the final word rests with the electorate, while dismissing that he is not anyone’s project.

“At the end of the day, it is the people who will decide. Just relax, wait and in due course you will make your mind yourself whether or not I’m a state project,” he said.

Maraga also recently welcomed endorsement by the Gen Z to vie for the presidency, stating that he is discussing the matter with various stakeholders.

Speaking after a public lecture at Rongo University in Migori County on March 27, 2025, Maraga had said he would make the final decision public.

“The request has been made; I’m discussing it with various stakeholders. I will make a final decision, and when the time comes, we will see whether or not we will do that,” he said.
