Gucha Stars promotion to NSL nullified over fielding ineligible player

Published 9 hours ago2 minute read

Gucha Stars historic promotion to the National Super League has been nullified after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Leagues & Competitions Committee found the club guilty of fielding an ineligible player, Eugene Nyakaga, during a critical match against Nakuru Bucks.

In a decision released on 23rd May 2025, the FKF ruled that Gucha Stars contravened the FKF Rules and Regulations by using a player involved in a case of impersonation.

The committee determined that Eugene Nyakaga featured in the match under a false identity, a serious violation that undermined the integrity of the competition.

The FKF committee, led by Vice Chairman Danson Njuguna, stated that Gucha Stars had “knowingly or unknowingly been a party to the commission of false documents," a breach of FKF Rule 6.2.1 relating to player registration.

1. Gucha Stars FC shall forfeit the match against Nakuru Bucks FC for fielding an ineligible player.

2. Eugene Nyakaga has been suspended for 365 days, effective immediately, for his role in the impersonation.

However, controversy clouds the ruling. The protest that triggered the investigation was filed more than three weeks after the match, well outside the stipulated timeframe allowed for lodging such complaints. This has raised questions about due process and adherence to FKF’s regulations.

To further complicate matters, Nakuru Bucks FC, the alleged aggrieved party, issued a public statement dissociating itself from the protest.

The club emphasized that the person who submitted the complaint had no official mandate or backing from its management.

With Gucha Stars’ promotion now reversed and the integrity of the protest under scrutiny, this case could become a major flashpoint for FKF’s disciplinary procedures and transparency in Kenyan football Management.
