A Houston-area woman is dead after a gravel hauler and her vehicle crashed Thursday morning on Interstate 75 in Oakland County, the Michigan State Police reported.
Both the woman, who was driving a Jeep Compass, and the Kenworth gravel hauler were northbound on I-75 about 6:40 a.m. when the crash happened near Woodward Heights Boulevard in Hazel Park.
Troopers said their initial investigation showed the woman lost control of the Jeep and began to spin into the path of the gravel hauler. "The gravel hauler struck the Jeep on the driver side and pushed it approximately 750 feet before being able to stop," the report said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene; authorities have since notified her family.
The gravel hauler driver was not hurt.
The interstate was closed northbound at Nine Mile Road; and then the closure was extended to Eight Mile Road, according to Michigan Department of Transportation announcements. Traffic was temporarily detoured to M-1/Woodward North. Northbound I-75 reopened about noon.
Southeast Michigan saw a fresh layer of light snow early Thursday; and Michigan State Police said they were called to 35 "preventable crashes" in the metro area between midnight and 9 a.m.
"We continue to remind drivers to slow down and drive carefully when road conditions change," MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said in his report.
