Governor Wanga Rescues Granny Who Offered 6 Chickens to Clear Ksh131,000 Fee

Published 3 days ago3 minute read

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has finally stepped in to help a grandmother who touched the hearts of many after offering six chickens to clear school fees for two children.

The two students from Adiedo Mixed Secondary School had been sent home over a Ksh131,920 fee arrears. Unable to clear the fee balance, their grandmother offered to reduce the amount by offering six chickens.

Their grandmother, Consolata Oduya, took the chickens to school, each estimated at Ksh1,000. She arrived at the school hoping the principal would accept them.

Following the incident, photos of the granny flanked by her grandchildren went viral on social media platforms, eliciting strong reactions from Kenyans. The photos depicted a teacher carefully examining the hens as the granny and the children stared helplessly.

Calls for help began streaming in as Kenyans rallied in support of the grandmother. Among those who were touched by the story was the Homa Bay Governor.

In a brief statement on Thursday evening, Governor Wanga revealed that she had learned about the incident on social media, adding that she had already intervened and helped the two students, who are in Forms Three and Four.

Wanga noted that she visited the family and school and committed to clearing the remaining fee balance of Ksh 81,920 following an additional Ksh 50,000 contribution from another well-wisher.

To further mitigate a recurrence of the same, Wanga announced that the learners were enrolled in Homa Bay County's scholarship programme and would support them up to college.

"After learning about Mitchell (Form 4) and Hillary (Form 3) through media reports, we took immediate action. We visited the family and school and committed to clearing the remaining fee balance of Ksh81,920," Wanga announced.

"This follows a generous Ksh50,000 contribution from a well-wisher, which reduced their initial debt of Ksh131,920.  To secure their future, we’ve enrolled both students in our scholarship program and will support them through college," she added.

The viral grandmother has since broken her silence and appreciated Kenyans who quickly came in to help her. In a heartfelt message, the granny expressed her joy after the school returned the chicken to her following help from multiple well-wishers.

Comedian Eric Omondi was among those who came to her aid. Omondi on Wednesday, May 14, urged Kenyans with information about the whereabouts of the grandmother to inform him.
