Government to begin construction of Afram River bridge
The project is part of the administration’s Big Push infrastructure agenda aimed at boosting connectivity and development.
The proposed 3.6-kilometre bridge will link the Eastern, Ashanti, and Oti regions. Past efforts to construct it have stalled under previous administrations.
Along with the bridge, the government also plans to rehabilitate over 100 kilometres of roads in the Afram Plains to better support agriculture and educational access, particularly for a new satellite campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development.
During a site visit on April 28, Minister Agbodza acknowledged past setbacks but said the current government is committed to delivering the project.
“Two attempts have been made so far to get that bridge done and so far it did not materialize. He [President Mahama] has instructed that under the Big Push, this bridge would have to be done to connect the South and the North as you can see. The potentials are great,” the Minister said.
He noted that the bridge design will be cost-effective and durable, and that work could begin as early as next year, even if external funding is delayed.
The goal, he added, is to complete the project within President Mahama’s current term.
