The projects, highlighted by Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Agbodza during a site assessment on April 28, 2025, seek to enhance agricultural productivity, regional connectivity, and economic opportunities in the historically underserved area.

Key road corridors under consideration include the Mpraeso–Obomeng–Nkawkaw, Abooso–Mpaem, Mpaem–Kwahu–Adawso, and Feyiase–Kwahu Tafo routes, as well as links between Ekye Amanfrom–Takoratwene, Takoratwene–Dome, Takoratwene–Donkorkrom, and Donkorkrom–New Kyeiase. Minister Agbodza, accompanied by engineering teams, emphasized that the proposed bridge will serve as a critical junction connecting the Eastern, Ashanti, and Oti Regions.

“This infrastructure will unlock the Afram Plains for large-scale agriculture and agro-processing investments,” Agbodza stated during a press briefing in Donkorkrom. He reiterated President John Mahama’s commitment to “opening up the Afram Plains once and for all,” noting the project’s potential to reduce poverty through job creation and improved market access for local farmers.

The initiative aligns with broader regional integration goals, aiming to streamline transportation of goods such as cassava, maize, and fish to urban centers. Officials anticipate the bridge and road network will also attract private-sector investment in logistics and processing facilities, leveraging the area’s fertile lands and proximity to Lake Volta.

Infrastructure development in the Afram Plains has long been prioritized by successive governments, though execution challenges such as funding gaps and terrain difficulties have delayed progress. The current plan echoes previous efforts to address isolation in Ghana’s agricultural heartlands, akin to initiatives like the Eastern Corridor Road Project.

Analysts suggest that sustained investment in rural infrastructure could bolster food security and export capacity, though effective implementation will hinge on budgetary allocations and technical oversight. With construction timelines yet to be finalized, stakeholders await further details on funding sources and environmental safeguards for the ecologically sensitive riverine zone.
