UDA Expels Gloria Orwoba from Senate

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has expelled Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba from the party due to disciplinary violations and alleged dual political loyalties. According to a statement, the expulsion followed deliberations by the UDA Disciplinary Committee, which reviewed a complaint filed by party members Festus Omwamba and Henry Muriithi. The UDA National Executive Committee (NEC) formally ratified the committee's ruling on May 19, 2025.
UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar stated that Orwoba "no longer enjoys any privileges accorded to party members nor is she authorized to represent or act on behalf of the Party in any capacity." The party has written to the Speaker of the Senate to initiate the process of her removal from office. Consolata Wabwire Wakabwubi from Kimilili Constituency, Bungoma County, has been nominated to replace Orwoba in the Senate, adhering to the party's nomination rules.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional rights but emphasized the importance of political loyalty, stating, "Hon. Gloria Orwoba cannot therefore continue to play for two political teams simultaneously." The NEC, chaired by Governor Cecily Mbarire, ratified the committee’s decision at a meeting held at the party’s headquarters. UDA has notified the Registrar of Political Parties (RPP) and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of the expulsion.
UDA also initiated her removal from the Senate, stating that this action was taken to safeguard its integrity and unity. According to the statement, the party’s Disciplinary Committee found Orwoba guilty of violating Article 29 of the UDA Constitution. UDA has nominated Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi from Kimilili, Bungoma County, to replace Orwoba in the Senate, based on the party list submitted to the IEBC before the 2022 general election. The party stressed that while it upholds constitutional freedoms, political discipline and loyalty are non-negotiable for its members.
Orwoba, a first-term senator nominated in 2022 under the gender top-up category, faced troubles after being spotted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on April 17, welcoming former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. Her presence at Matiang’i’s homecoming, attended by opposition politicians, raised concerns within UDA. Furthermore, her participation in Matiang’i’s subsequent political tour across the Gusii region was seen as an endorsement of a potential challenger to President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
