Godrej Fund Signs $236 Million Studio Deal
Godrej Fund Management has partnered with the Maharashtra government to invigorate India's content creation sector. A memorandum of understanding was signed with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) conference in Mumbai, outlining plans for a state-of-the-art film, television, and media campus at Godrej City, Panvel. Mumbai, Maharashtra, serves as the base for the Hindi-language Bollywood film industry.
The project involves an investment of INR20 billion (approximately $236 million) and is expected to create around 2,500 jobs across various disciplines. Phase one will see an investment of roughly $59 million on a 10-acre area. This is the second major infrastructure deal signed with the Maharashtra government during WAVES, following a $400 million entertainment hub deal with Prime Focus Group.
Strategically located at Godrej City, a self-sustaining township spanning approximately 145 acres with a 30-acre golf course, the campus benefits from excellent connectivity. It is near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link) further improves access to South Mumbai.
Aimed at boosting India’s content production status, the campus will feature AA studios, intended as a creative center for artists, musicians, and filmmakers. The facility aims to align with the Indian government’s incentive policy for foreign film productions, potentially drawing international projects to India.
Under the agreement, the Maharashtra government will expedite necessary permissions, registrations, approvals, and fiscal incentives from state departments for the campus development. The design incorporates cutting-edge technologies, including AI integration, with input from international experts.
In addition to direct employment in content production, the project is anticipated to drive growth in hospitality, technical services, and tourism, while increasing foreign exchange earnings.
