'Ghostbusters' star Ernie Hudson joins 'Boston Blue,' CBS' 'Blue Bloods' spinoff

"Boston Blue" has added veteran actor Ernie Hudson as a series regular, according to a report in Deadline. He'll play the father of Sonequa Martin-Green's character — a detective with the Boston PD and partner to Donnie Wahlberg's newly relocated Danny Reagan. Not quite a spinoff of "Blue Bloods," "Boston Blue" has been described by CBS as an "expansion" of the now-canceled beloved show's universe.

Probably best known as Winston Zeddemore from the "Ghostbusters" franchise, Hudson has had hundreds of roles — from bit part to lead — dating back to the mid-70s. Probably the best known of those on TV was Warden Leo Glynn from "Oz" in the late '90s — Hudson has often played authority figures. More recently he was a regular on NBC's "Quantum Leap" reboot, and has been the lead on the BET prime-time soap, "The Family Business" since 2018.

The Deadline post describes his "Boston Blue" character, Rev. Peters, as "a renowned pastor of a historic Baptist church in Boston [and] an "open-minded, welcoming man that is comfortable in all traditions, he is happy to preside at his church’s traditional Sunday Baptist service. Rev. Peters is the father of Mae Silver, Boston’s District Attorney (role not yet cast), and grandfather of Det. Lena Silver (Martin-Green)."

Debuting this fall, "Boston Blue" will air Fridays at 10 p.m., the former "Blue Bloods" time slot.
