Ghana Advances Oil Expansion with Eban-Akoma Field Approval
The declaration follows a formal submission by a consortium including Eni Ghana, Vitol Upstream Tano, Woodfields Upstream Ghana, and GNPC Explorco, partnered with state-owned Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
According to ministry records, the July 3, 2025 declaration validates reserves in the Eban-1X oil well and Akoma-1X gas-condensate well after successful appraisal. Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor hailed the development as pivotal for economic transformation and energy security, stating it reinforces offshore potential to drive industrialization.
With commercial viability secured, the consortium will now prepare a comprehensive Plan of Development (PoD) focused on optimizing resource recovery, local content participation, and value addition. The ministry confirmed collaboration with the Petroleum Commission and GNPC to provide technical oversight during execution.
Officials emphasize the project aligns with Ghana’s strategy to build a transparent, investor-friendly energy sector balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship. The discoveries in Ghana’s Western offshore basin bolster the nation’s bid to solidify its regional energy hub status amid rising exploration interest.
