Speaking during Oduor’s farewell mass, Jakakimba, who had been designated to speak on behalf of the bereaved family, recounted how Raila wept uncontrollably when he called him to express his sorrow over the loss.
"This George has gone through so much with Raila Odinga. It has never been an easy journey," Jakakimba said.
"And that is why I comforted Raila yesterday. He called me and cried on the phone. For Raila to cry, it means that this loss has deeply touched him."
Jakakimba's words painted a picture of a devastated Raila, mourning a man who had stood beside him in his most turbulent political battles.
Oduor had endured police brutality, tear gas, and countless dangers while ensuring Raila's safety, making him not just a bodyguard but a trusted companion and friend.
Jakakimba further reflected on his personal connection with Oduor, reminiscing about their days as neighbours in Nairobi’s Highrise Estate.
He recounted how Oduor took the initiative to bring him closer after Raila and his team relocated from the estate.
"When they moved from Highrise to where they live now, George, as usual, took me for tea in town," he narrated.
"He told me, ‘I know you have moved, but I don’t think we should leave you behind in Highrise.’ A month later, I joined them, just two blocks away."
Jakakimba recalled staying there for five years, a period that strengthened his bond with Oduor, who remained a dependable figure in Raila’s inner circle.
Oduor’s death marks the end of a significant chapter in Raila's political journey.
For over thirty years, Oduor was a silent yet formidable presence behind Raila, standing firm during political rallies, anti-government protests, and even dangerous encounters with security forces.
Earlier, Raila mourned the passing of George Oduor, describing him as a loyal confidant and an indispensable part of his family’s history.
In an emotional tribute, Raila expressed deep sorrow, highlighting Oduor’s unwavering dedication and professionalism.
He noted that Oduor's relationship with the Odinga family dates back to the late 1980s, when he served under his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, before continuing his steadfast service under Raila himself.
