In Plateau State, tensions are running high following the alleged poisoning of cattle in the Bassa Local Government Area. The state government has launched an investigation into the incident, which reportedly resulted in the death of dozens of cows. This event has stoked fears of escalating conflict between local farmers and herders, a long-standing issue in the region.

According to reports, the incident occurred in the Tafi Gana community of Bassa LGA, where 36 cows belonging to a local herder, Malam Samaila Nuhu, allegedly died after ingesting poisonous substances while grazing. Ya’u Idris, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Bassa, stated that the cattle consumed what appeared to be poisonous garden eggs scattered in the grazing areas near Tafi Gana junction.

The incident took place shortly after Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited the area to address victims of a recent attack by armed bandits that claimed the lives of over 50 people in the Miango district of Bassa LGA. This backdrop of violence and communal tension adds complexity to the investigation.

Joyce Ramnap, the state’s commissioner for information and communications, confirmed that the Ministry of Livestock Development, Veterinary Services, and Fisheries has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation. A team of experts has been deployed to collect samples and ascertain the facts surrounding the alleged poisoning.

The police spokesperson in the state, Alfred Alabo, confirmed the death of 33 cows and stated that the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Bzigu Kwazhi, along with the State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, visited the community to commiserate with the affected cattle owner and urged residents to avoid taking matters into their own hands.

The government has appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading speculative narratives that could further inflame tensions. They have also reiterated their commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence, inclusive dialogue, and sustainable solutions to address long-standing issues related to land use and grazing rights.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities urging all stakeholders to allow due process to take its course, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and avoiding inflammatory statements during this sensitive time.
