Gabby Otchere-Darko confirms shutdown of Asaase Radio

The Chairman of Asaase Broadcasting Company, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has confirmed media reports regarding the closure of one of his media stations, Asaase Radio 99.5.

Reacting to the closure on his X page on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart stated that the shutdown by the National Communications Authority (NCA) was due to delay in the renewal of its licenses in 2024, which permit the station to legally operate in the country.

According to him, the broadcasting station’s license was renewed in December 2024, although it was originally due for renewal in October of the same year.

“Yes, it’s true. Asaase Radio 99.5, which celebrates its 5th anniversary on Saturday, has been shut down. The General Manager informs me it’s because the station delayed in renewing its licence last year. It was to be renewed by October but only done in December 2024,” the politician posted.

The closure follows the NCA’s directive ordering the immediate suspension of operations for more than 60 FM broadcasting stations across the country.

The statement by the NCA on Thursday, June 12, 2025, indicated that out of 62 media houses that were shut down, 28 were found to be operating with expired authorisations, while 14 received authorisation but failed to set up operations within two years, breaching regulatory timelines.

Thirteen (13) stations were also said to be operating under provisional authorisation, despite having paid the required fees.

The remaining seven (7) stations paid provisional fees, but final authorisation is pending due to non-fulfilment of requirements under the Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations.
