Former Managing Director Claims Unfair Treatment in Missing ECG Containers Case

Samuel Dubik Mahama, the former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has publicly contested the findings of a committee investigating the alleged disappearance of ECG containers at the Tema Port. In a statement made on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on April 2, 2025, Mahama expressed his concern that he was unfairly implicated in the committee's report without being given the opportunity to respond to the allegations.
Mahama emphasized that he was not consulted by the committee before they cited him in their report. He stated, “I am here primarily to ensure that I am not unfairly judged by the public regarding the issue of the supposedly missing containers. Though I will not speak directly to the claims in the report because I was not consulted by the committee in the first place, I want to declare my innocence in this matter. The committee has not treated me fairly by indicting me in portions of the report without contacting me for my explanation regarding some of the allegations.”
Despite his reservations about the report's process, Mahama refrained from directly addressing the specific claims made within it, citing his lack of consultation as the primary reason. He also urged the Minister of Energy to exercise caution in drawing conclusions about the supposed missing containers.
Mahama challenged the notion that the containers are genuinely missing, asserting that every container that passes through the port has a unique identification number, making them traceable. He outlined potential scenarios for the containers' whereabouts, suggesting possibilities such as misplacement at a terminal, loss at sea, or auction. According to Mahama, a comprehensive investigation should be able to determine the location of each container.
“I do not subscribe to the claim that the containers are missing because every container that passes through the port has a unique number. A container can only be cleared after all requirements and documentation have been fulfilled. In the case of these ECG containers, there are three possibilities: they could have been misplaced at a terminal, lost at sea, or auctioned. A thorough investigation will lead us to their whereabouts," he stated.
Furthermore, Mahama offered his assistance to the Minister of Energy in conducting a forensic audit to locate the containers. He expressed his willingness to cooperate in reconciling the number of containers imported with those that were either auctioned or cleared. He stated, “I have not gone anywhere. I am willing and ready to help the minister conduct a forensic audit to locate the containers. They should take their time to reconcile the number of containers imported with those that were either auctioned or cleared,”
The controversy surrounding the missing ECG containers at the Tema Port continues to unfold, with Mahama's public defense adding a new layer to the ongoing investigation.
