Former Chief Justice David Maraga has been teargassed along Kimathi Street in Nairobi as he joined protesters marking the anniversary of the June 25 demonstrations.

Earlier, Maraga had addressed his supporters outside the Nation Centre building, calling for peaceful and orderly protests.

‘’We should all ensure our women are safe let us all ensure everyone is safe,” he said.

Supporters shielded him to safety when police lobbed teargas canisters into the crowd.

After the incident, Maraga condemned the police action and urged Kenyans to unite and vote out the current government.

“We need to reset this country because the work of the police is to protect the people not disrupt peaceful protesters,” he said.

He added, “I can testify that no one attempted to destroy property. We were peaceful.”

‘’We strongly condemn the use of state violence against grieving families and peaceful protestors. The flagrant violation of the Constitution and human rights must stop,’’Maraga also  posted on his X page.

Several opposition leaders have joined the demonstrations, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, who laid wreaths outside Parliament, in memory of those killed during last year’s protests.

Also joined the protesters in the streets were Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Senator Okiya Omtatah, Kitui Senator Enock Wambua, lawyer Njiru Ndegwa, Kathiani MP Robert Mbui, and Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid.
