It's been over 25 years since a fatal plane crash that killed John F Kennedy Jr, his wife Carolyn Bessette and her sister Lauren.

The trio met a tragic fate as the private airplane he was flying crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Martha's Vineyard.

Renowned TV writer, director and producer Ryan Murphy has now reimagined JFK Jr and Carolyn's love story in his new series, slated for a February 2026 release.

The latest in Murphy's American Story franchise (including American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and American Sports Story), American Love Story will follow the courtship and marriage between JFK Jr and his fashion publicist wife Carolyn.

Murphy has introduced Michigan-born actress Sarah Pidgeon as his Carolyn, who will star opposite newcomer Paul Kelly as JFK Jr, and we have to say the pair are the spitting image of the late couple.

Sharing the news on social media on Friday, Murphy penned: 'FIRST LOOK! Here are some stills from our LOVE STORY camera test. We started shooting this week in New York City and can’t wait until you see the romantic and tragic love story between America’s prince, JFK Jr., and fashion icon Carolyn Bessette - out Valentine’s Day week of 2026.

'I am thrilled to introduce you to Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn and Paul Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. Over a thousand actors auditioned for each of these roles, and we absolutely found the perfect choices. Congratulations Sarah and Paul!'

Among excited prospective viewers reeling over the casting were some familiar faces, including Mindy Kaling, who simply wrote 'wow', and Marc Jacobs, who said he 'can't wait' for the upcoming series.

Also spotted in the comments section was Paul Kelly's mum Sharon's proud mammy moment, as she penned: 'Ever so proud of my son! I am so very excited. Congratulations to all!'

Carolyn was a fashion publicist for Calvin Klein, and was well-known for her classic, minimalistic style. Actress Sarah embodied this chic and understated look perfectly in a black turtleneck, black trousers and a tan coat.

She wore a pair of closed-toe black pumps, and allowed her long, platinum blonde hair to cascade neatly down straight past her shoulders.

Her on-screen hubby Paul looked suitably dapper in a double-breasted grey suit, which he paired with a white dress shirt and a red-patterned tie.

Her further embodied the role of the late JFK Jr in another image, in which he wore a more relaxed outfit consisting of a pair of jeans, a green shirt and a black vest - a look not dissimilar to one worn in the past by the late attorney.

On the fateful night of July 16, 1999, JFK Jr, Carolyn and Lauren set off on a single-engine aircraft from Cape Code travelling to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.

The married couple had planned to drop off Lauren at Martha's Vineyard before continuing on to Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, where they were going to attend the wedding of his cousin Rory.

However, the trio never made it to their destination as the plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all onboard.

Investigators later announced that it was a combination of JFK Jr's inexperience of flying and 'spatial disorientation that caused the devastating tragedy.
