Fire Devastates Shops in Ibadan Market, Causing Significant Losses

A devastating fire has ravaged the Mayegun Cement Store Market, located in the Araromi area of Agodi Gate, Ibadan, resulting in the destruction of twelve shops and properties worth millions of naira. The incident occurred on Thursday, April 10, 2025, prompting a swift response from the Oyo State Fire Service.
Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident and stated that the agency received a distress call at 11:02 PM on Thursday. Fire personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they found several lock-up shops engulfed in flames. Firefighters acted quickly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other shops, successfully saving properties worth billions of naira within the market.
According to preliminary investigations, the fire was triggered by an electrical surge that ignited nearby combustible materials. While the fire caused significant property damage, Mr. Akinyinka confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.
This is not the first time the Araromi market has experienced such a disaster. In December 2024, a fire broke out in the spare parts section of the market, causing millions of naira in damages. Additionally, the Aleshinloye market was also gutted by fire on March 11, with the blaze burning for over 12 hours, despite the presence of a fire station nearby. These repeated incidents raise concerns about fire safety measures and infrastructure within Ibadan's markets.
Authorities are urging market vendors and the public to take necessary precautions to prevent future fire outbreaks, including ensuring electrical systems are properly maintained and avoiding the storage of flammable materials in unsafe conditions. An investigation into the specific circumstances surrounding the Mayegun Cement Store Market fire is currently underway.
