Nearly six years after its last new episode aired, David Fincher’s acclaimed “Mindhunter” TV series may finally be resurrected.

The series followed a group at the FBI that developed the agency’s profiling methods as they interviewed mass murderers. Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv starred in the series while Fincher served as showrunner throughout the two-season run. He also directed seven of its nineteen episodes.

The critical darling ran for two seasons on the streamer, the costly show proving a major critical success and landed a small loyal audience. But it just wasn’t big enough for the budget it demanded, and Netflix opted not to move forward with ordering more.

It took years to get confirmation, but in 2023 Fincher revealed the project was dead and that seemed to be that… until today. McCallany, promoting his recent series “The Waterfront,” has revealed to CBR that there is a chance of the show coming back… as films:

“So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance. I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.

I would love it if it were to return. I think, like I said, you know, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had that meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align.

… It has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that’s a big question mark “

He’s also aware of the scheduling issues with Fincher and Tony winner Groff both very busy men. Fincher is currently in pre-production and gearing up to shoot the Quentin Tarantino-penned “The Adventures of Cliff Booth” starring Brad Pitt later this year.
