David Fincher's Mindhunter Could Return As 3 Netflix Movies

and happen to have any salt to hand, then now would be an appropriate time to take a big ol' pinch of it. Ever since Season 2 ended six years ago, lovers of Fincher's show — which follows the FBI's profiling and serial killer interviewing processes in its late 70s/early 80s infancy — have been clamouring for a third instalment, despite the big man himself having pronounced Mindhunter dead (or as good as) back in 2020. Now, miraculously, a new interview star Holt McCallany just had with CBR has just given us renewed hope that we may yet see Bill Tench (McCallany), Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), and Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) live to profile another day.

Talking to CBR about the passionate fanbase Mindhunter has cultivated online over the last eight years, McCallany let slip that there have been discussions — as recently as "a few months ago" — between himself and Fincher about a comeback, but not as a third season. Rather, per McCallany's own words, Fincher has mentioned the possibility of "three two-hour movies" at Netflix. "I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies," said McCallany, before caveating that admission by adding, "but I think it's just a chance." According to the actor, who plays Behavioural Science Unit special agent Bill Tench in the show, writers "are working" on ideas, but none of these plans or projects would move forward without Fincher's approval. "David has to be happy with the scripts," McCallany told CBR.

If all this talk of Mindhunter returning as a three-movie event of some sort sounds a little pie in the sky, then that's because it kind of is. McCallany himself said to CBR that "the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align" for him to get his wish of reuniting with Groff and Torv to hunt the minds of more of America's most sick and twisted individuals. But knowing that Mindhunter is still on the cast — and Fincher's — minds, even after all these years, gives us hope. And yes, we know they say it's the hope that kills you, but as the great philosopher Ted Lasso once countered, "It's the lack of hope that'll come and get you." So maybe we will see Tench, Ford, and Carr head to Hollywood after all...
