Nigerian Government Concludes Case in Nnamdi Kanu's Terrorism Trial

The Federal Government officially closed its case on Thursday in the high-profile trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu faces serious allegations bordering on terrorism and treason. This significant announcement was made by the Federal Government's counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The prosecution's decision to close its case followed the testimony and cross-examination of their fifth prosecution witness, identified only as EEE for security reasons. The witness was led in evidence and cross-examined by Kanu's lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu. Chief Awomolo stated that after presenting five witnesses and tendering an 'avalanche of evidence,' which included broadcasts of the IPOB leader's activities, the prosecution was satisfied that it had sufficiently met the requirements to conclude its presentation. He formally declared, 'I therefore close the case.'

In response to this development, the lead defence counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, informed the court of their intention to file a no-case submission. This legal maneuver, which seeks to argue that the prosecution has not presented sufficient evidence to establish a prima facie case against the accused, is expected to be filed in due course.
