The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has received official clearance from FIFA for Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu to make his debut for the Super Eagles, according to OwnGoalNigeria.com.

Agu, who was previously named in the Super Eagles squad for the Unity Cup but only allowed to train due to pending clearance, has now been confirmed eligible to play following verification from the German Football Association (DFB).

The NFF had insisted on obtaining written confirmation from FIFA before allowing Agu to feature for Nigeria, due to his prior appearances for Germany’s U21 team in 2019.

The German FA informed FIFA that Agu participated only in two friendly matches at the U21 level and never appeared in any official competitive fixtures at either the senior or junior levels.

An official post on the NFF’s social media accounts stated: “Felix Nnaemeka Agu confirmed ok to play for Nigeria (Super Eagles). The German FA have written to confirm that the player has never represented them at any official game at the A and Junior Level. He played only two friendly games for the U21 team in 2019. Welcome Felix.”

With clearance now secured, Agu is eligible for selection in the upcoming Unity Cup, starting with the game against Ghana on May 28, followed by a second match against either Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago.

He is also available for the friendly match against Russia scheduled for June.

In related news, Werder Bremen’s head of professional football, Peter Niemeyer, addressed transfer speculation linking Agu to potential moves to English Premier League clubs this summer. Despite reports suggesting that Premier League sides West Ham and Fulham are monitoring Agu, whose current contract runs through 2027 and reportedly includes a release clause between €8 million and €10 million, Niemeyer denied any contact with English clubs.

Speaking to Die DeichStube, Niemeyer described Agu as “an absolute value-added player” and an important part of the team.

He said, “We haven’t heard anything yet; nothing has been brought to our attention that we need to consider. We are firmly planning with him for the new season.”

Agu, who joined Werder Bremen in 2020 after his development years at VfL Osnabruck, had a notable season, scoring three goals in 22 Bundesliga appearances and recording the fastest sprint speed in the league on the final day.

The defender also led the league in earning penalties, with three won, one more than notable players such as Bayer Leverkusen’s Nathan Tella and Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens.

Agu remains a key player for Werder Bremen as the club prepares for the upcoming season.
