FG Plans Construction of 77,400 Houses Amid Rising Building Material Costs

The Nigerian federal government has unveiled an ambitious plan to construct 77,400 housing units nationwide, aimed at providing affordable homes for low-income individuals and vulnerable groups. This initiative, known as the Renewed Hope Social Housing Program, is poised to address the country's significant housing deficit by supplying 100 housing units in each of the 774 local government areas.
Spearheaded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the program allocates 80% of the constructed units to low-income earners, who will be able to purchase the homes over time by contributing one-third of their monthly salary. The remaining 20% of the units will be provided free of charge to underprivileged groups, including widows, orphans, and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, emphasized the program's inclusive nature, stating that it is designed to cater to Nigerians across all income levels. He highlighted that the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme is a key component of a broader national housing strategy, which also includes the development of Renewed Hope Cities and Renewed Hope Housing Estates to offer sustainable, affordable housing solutions throughout the country.
Funding for the Renewed Hope Social Housing Program will be sourced from the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF), which supports large-scale housing projects. Each housing estate will be equipped with essential community amenities, such as schools, clinics, parks, police stations, and commercial centers, to foster well-rounded and thriving communities.
In addition to increasing housing affordability, the government is also taking steps to reduce the cost of building materials. Minister Dangiwa announced plans to establish manufacturing centers for construction materials in each of the six geopolitical zones. This initiative aims to boost local production, lower material costs, and further enhance housing affordability for Nigerians.
The Renewed Hope Social Housing Program is expected to be launched soon by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with the goal of completing the housing units within one year of the program's commencement. This initiative represents a significant step towards addressing Nigeria's housing challenges and providing secure, affordable homes for its citizens.
