President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet, has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of fuelling recent protests in Nairobi city.

The protests held on Thursday, which were meant to call for action on the murder of blogger Albert Ojwang, turned chaotic.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters until late evening. During the protests, property was destroyed, and two vehicles were set on fire.

Now, Kibet accuses the former DP of supporting the protests.

“The tribalist has announced a roadmap. The other day, he started with burning cars in Nairobi. He went ahead to say there is a holiday on the 25th to burn Nairobi. Will they burn Kenya while we watch? Which protesters are allowed to burn the city?” said Farouk during a fundraiser in Uasin Gishu County on Saturday.

Ruto’s aide called on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to take action and ‘safeguard’ the city against such destruction.

Taking on the challenge, Governor Sakaja said those who destroyed public property in Nairobi during the demonstrations will be arrested.

The governor said proper investigations will be conducted, and those culpable will be arrested and prosecuted.

Sakaja noted that the constitution allows peaceful demonstrations but not violently, calling on Kenyans and especially politicians to shun divisive politics.

The protests followed the murder of Ojwang, who died in police custody on Sunday.

Investigations into Ojwang’s death at Central Police Station are ongoing, with police officers at the post having been interdicted.

Police officers, including Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam and James Mukhwana, have been arrested.

The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) continues with investigations into the matter.
