Fantastic Four: First Steps Trailer Reveals Silver Surfer

Marvel fans are buzzing with excitement after the release of a new trailer for "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." The film, set to hit theaters on July 25, 2025, marks the official MCU introduction of Marvel's First Family after Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox and its assets. This includes the X-Men, though audiences shouldn’t expect any other Marvel heroes to pop up in the movie, unless there are some multiverse hijinks, because "Fantastic Four" takes place in an alternate, retro-futuristic 1960s Manhattan, where it appears they’re the only heroes around as of now.

The new trailer offers a closer look at the cast, which includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. The ensemble cast also features Ralph Ineson as the planet-devouring villain Galactus, Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer, Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, John Malkovich, and Mark Gatiss as Ted Gilbert.

The trailer opens with a glimpse of Mark Gatiss as Ted Gilbert, the host of a fictional talk show. Gatiss's role is to lay out how the Fantastic Four came to be, which is a clever way to avoid making this another origin story movie. Known for his work in "Game of Thrones," "Doctor Who," and "Sherlock," Gatiss brings depth to the already stacked cast.

As the trailer unfolds, it highlights the FF’s status as global celebrities. However, the mood shifts dramatically as the sky is filled with storm clouds, and a metallic woman on a surfboard (Julia Garner) announces that Earth has been chosen to be destroyed by an even more terrifying presence from beyond the stars. While the team doesn’t seem to have any idea who the Silver Surfer is or what she heralds, the trailer suggests that Reed’s experiments stretching “the bounds of space” may be the cause of her sudden appearance. This plot point may factor into the Fantastic Four’s upcoming appearances in Marvel’s multiversal Avengers: Doomsday feature.

The trailer also provides a first look at Julia Garner's Silver Surfer, who looks exactly like she does in the comics. She arrives on Earth to warn the Fantastic Four that their planet has been marked for death by Galactus. The gigantic villain's presence is felt, with Galactus walking on the planet to end the trailer.

Also showcased are Reed’s stretching powers and confirms that Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm is pregnant in the film. The Invisible Woman has two kids with Mr. Fantastic in the comics, Franklin and Valeria Richards. With Sue pregnant in her MCU debut, it seems like Franklin could play a key role in one or both of the Multiverse Saga's Avengers movies.

The film will focus on the Fantastic Four trying to stop Galactus from destroying their planet. One shot from the trailer appears to show the Fantastic Four's ship flying away as Earth is destroyed, which could explain their Avengers movie role.

"The Fantastic Four: First Steps" is directed by Matt Shakman and is one of two huge movies Marvel has coming out this summer, along with "Thunderbolts*." The official synopsis states that the Fantastic Four must balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond to defend Earth from Galactus and the Silver Surfer. With a comics-accurate Galactus, the film promises to be an epic affair.
