Experts in India Discuss the Ethics and Future Role of AI

Lucknow is rapidly emerging as a hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovation and discourse, as evidenced by recent conferences and initiatives focused on harnessing AI's transformative potential. Sarojininagar MLA Rajeshwar Singh recently underscored AI's pivotal role in shaping the future at the 8th International Conference on Challenges and Opportunities in Artificial Intelligence, held at a private institute in Lucknow. Singh emphasized that AI is evolving at an unprecedented pace, potentially surpassing human intelligence by 2045. He highlighted the Indian government's commitment to AI development, noting the allocation of Rs 10,371 crores for AI initiatives under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Singh further announced the establishment of an AI Intelligence Centre in Nadarganj, Lucknow, with a focus on critical areas such as forensic science, governance, and cybersecurity.

Singh emphasized AI's expanding role in governance, healthcare, and finance, citing its successful application in managing 65 crore visitors at the Kumbh Mela. However, he also raised concerns about the escalating threat of cybercrime, noting a significant surge in complaints from 26,000 in 2018 to 26 lakh in 2024. The conference concluded with awards recognizing outstanding contributions to AI research, encouraging students to actively engage in AI-driven innovation.

Further solidifying Lucknow's position as an AI-focused center, the Jaipuria Institute of Management hosted its 19th annual conference on ‘AI-driven transformation: Shaping the future of business.' The conference featured insights from industry leaders, including Mukesh Jain, EVP and CTO of Capgemini, who emphasized AI's impact on the job market. Gunjan Gupta, an AI, data & analytics consultant, highlighted how business leaders are leveraging AI's power, while Pramod Singh, expert associate partner at Bain & Company, discussed evolving preferences and solutions in the AI landscape. Shiva Kakkar, Vice-President of AI at Jaipuria, explored AI's transformative role in education, addressing both its potential benefits and ethical considerations.

A panel discussion on ‘Ethical imperative: Responsibility through responsible AI' featured prominent figures such as Rasesh Shah (CPO, Fractal Analytics), Sambhav Jain (MD & partner, BCG), Mohit Sewak (Global leader in generative AI, Google), and Utpal Chakraborty (Ambassador, Gartner). Kavita Pathak, Director of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, emphasized the critical need to understand and adapt to the rapidly evolving world, stating that "survival and growth will only be unlocked when we make sense of the world around us, and that AI has a huge contemporary and future role to play in that. And if we ourselves do not grow into it, then it shall outgrow us."

These events underscore Lucknow's growing importance as a hub for AI research, development, and ethical discourse, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges presented by this rapidly advancing technology.
