Exclusive | How 'White Lotus' star Parker Posey feels about becoming an internet meme
Piper, No!
Parker Posey knew her iconic “White Lotus” character would become a viral internet sensation.
“I wasn’t surprised because the lines were so funny,” she told Page Six exclusively at the Gotham Television Awards, and despite not being on social media herself, the actress knew it was “a meme performance.”
“I was so happy that people were imitating me,” the “Best in Show” star continued. “People are having fun imitating me and I’m very, very happy.”
Parker played Victoria Ratliff, a wealthy wife and mother of three with a distinctive South Carolina drawl, whose lines like, “I don’t even have my Lorazepam. I’m going to have to drink myself to sleep” and “I just don’t think at this age I’m meant to live an uncomfortable life” have been plastered onto mugs, T-shirts and bags.
The “You’ve Got Mail” star was on hand at the Gotham Awards to receive the first-ever Legend Tribute Award and was introduced by her “White Lotus” co-stars Sam Rockwell and Leslie Bibb.
“Let’s keep the arts alive,” Parker shouted enthusiastically during her acceptance speech. “Let’s turn this business into entertainment that everyone can love. That old people and young people, and even babies laugh at!”
She also thanked the show’s creator, Mike White, “for writing this character for me, for believing in a middle-aged woman, and believing in a legend. Thank you, HBO, for believing in a legend!”
Parker later joked to Page Six that because she’s been crowned a “legend,” she’s ready to hang up her hat.
“I’m done,” she quipped. “I was going to announce my retirement on stage tonight but I forgot!”
