Toffees boss David Moyes is pushing hard for the return to Goodison Park of his former captain, but it is believed Thelwell’s knowledge and experience remains highly valued by the club.

Everton could offer the 51-year-old a new role to keep him on Merseyside.

He has been with the club since joining from Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls at the end of February 2022.

Thelwell’s contract with Everton is due to expire at the end of the current campaign.

The Farhad Moshiri appointment has worked through a tough time at Goodison, with the club forced to raise funds by selling star players before spending on incomings.

He has previously been academy manager and sporting director for Wolves before leaving for the US in 2020.

Meanwhile, Weir could join Everton after his success with Brighton as technical director – a role which was previously occupied by Dan Ashworth.

Former Man United and West Ham scout Mick Brown has told Football Insider that Everton are looking to sign similar talents to Iliman Ndiaye this summer.

Football Insider revealed on 16 February that Everton plan to revisit interest in Rayan Cherki of Lyon in the summer transfer window – among other key attacking targets.

Moyes’ side sit 14th in the Premier League table this term and have pulled 13 points clear of the drop zone after the January sacking of Sean Dyche.
