Elea Announces Rio AI City Data Center Project in Brazil

Elea Data Centers has announced the Rio AI City project, a major data center ecosystem in Rio de Janeiro's Olympic Park region. This initiative is designed to support the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud computing applications. The project represents a multi-billion dollar investment, positioning it as one of the largest digital infrastructure endeavors in Latin America and globally.

Rio AI City will have an initial energy capacity of 1.5 GW, potentially expanding to 3.2 GW in future phases. The first delivery of capacity, approximately 80 MW from the RJO2 site, is scheduled for 2026. The project will operate with 100% renewable and certified energy, utilizing waterless cooling systems and green skin architecture for efficiency and sustainability.

The data center ecosystem includes the operational RJO1 data center, described as the most interconnected site in the Rio de Janeiro region. RJO2 is currently under construction, with RJO3 and RJO4 to follow, adding another 120 MW. The expansion aims to reach 1.5 GW in the initial phase, with potential for up to 3.2 GW.

The project is integrated into Rio de Janeiro's urban infrastructure, including the submarine cable hub and local energy grid, which boasts 99.8% availability. It is also connected to the Mata Maravilha urban regeneration project, which will reforest and revitalize over 200,000 sqm, creating a digital zone for green technology and attracting innovation companies and digital nomads.

Rio AI City is projected to generate over 10,000 high-skilled jobs and is institutionally supported by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall. The city sees this project as a means of solidifying its position as a capital of the new economy and a global technology hub, attracting investment and fostering innovation.

Alessandro Lombardi, president and founder of Elea Data Centers, emphasizes that Rio AI City is designed for the future, creating an ecosystem between community, sustainability, and technological innovation. Eduardo Paes, mayor of Rio de Janeiro, highlights the project's role in transforming Rio into a major global technology hub.

Elea Data Centers, headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, operates a network of interconnected data center campuses across Brazil, supporting the high-density cloud and AI deployment needs of hyperscalers and large enterprises. The company aims to accelerate a responsible digital economy from the Edge to the Hyperscale, powered by 100% renewable energy.
