El-Rufai Visits Ex-President Buhari in Kaduna Amidst Political Claims

Recent events in Nigerian politics have stirred significant discussion, particularly concerning the interactions between key political figures and the potential realignments within the country's political landscape. Notably, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai's visit to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari at his Kaduna residence on Friday, March 7, has captured considerable attention. This visit occurred amidst El-Rufai's public criticisms of President Bola Tinubu's economic policies and his expressed uncertainty regarding supporting Tinubu in the 2027 elections, adding layers of intrigue to the meeting.
Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai's media aide, confirmed the visit via a post on X, although specific details of the meeting were not disclosed. The timing of the visit has led to speculation about its purpose, with some suggesting it was a simple courtesy call to welcome Buhari back to his Kaduna residence after spending approximately two years in his hometown of Daura, Katsina state.
El-Rufai's relationship with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu has been under scrutiny. As a founding member of the APC, El-Rufai was a staunch supporter of Tinubu's election and was initially nominated for a cabinet position. However, his nomination was not approved by the National Assembly, a development El-Rufai has attributed to President Tinubu himself. This alleged withdrawal of support has seemingly led to El-Rufai publicly criticizing the APC and expressing reservations about the current administration's economic policies and their implementation.
These circumstances have fueled speculation about potential shifts in political alliances within the APC as the 2027 elections approach. The meeting between El-Rufai and Buhari could be a precursor to significant strategic realignments within the party.
Adding another layer of complexity, Dare Glintstone Akinniyi, spokesperson for the PDP National Youth Group, has suggested the possibility of El-Rufai working towards Atiku Abubakar’s presidency in 2027. Akinniyi highlighted El-Rufai's instrumental role in shifting power to the South for Tinubu's election in 2023, noting that El-Rufai took the battle to the North, even going against the convictions of ex-President Buhari. However, according to Akinniyi, El-Rufai was subsequently abandoned by the APC-led government.
Meanwhile, in Akwa Ibom State, the All Progressives Congress Media Network has responded to allegations by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that Senate President Godswill Akpabio is behind the petition and dissemination of reports concerning fraud and money laundering allegations against former Governor Udom Emmanuel. The PDP accused Akpabio of orchestrating a smear campaign against Emmanuel, who was recently questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Otuekong Iniobong John, Director General of the APC Media Network, dismissed these allegations, asserting that Akpabio is focused on legislative duties and would not engage in disseminating news of Emmanuel’s investigation. John emphasized the EFCC's mandate to investigate financial crimes and cautioned against attributing Emmanuel's ordeal to a smear campaign by Akpabio or any other individual. He challenged the PDP to confirm whether Emmanuel was indeed invited/arrested by the EFCC before making such accusations.
The APC Media Network also warned against ethnic undertones being attached to Emmanuel’s situation, noting that PDP chieftain Chief Ndueso Essien had already exonerated Akpabio of any involvement. The network condemned the PDP’s attempt to manipulate public opinion and tarnish Akpabio’s reputation, urging the public to see through what they describe as cheap propaganda.
These political developments underscore the dynamic and often contentious nature of Nigerian politics, with alliances shifting and accusations flying as various actors position themselves ahead of future elections.
