His death, confirmed by the family through a statement released by spokesperson Michael Okwiri, sent shockwaves across the country, with fans and fellow broadcasters expressing grief and celebrating a life that left a permanent mark on Kenya’s radio airwaves.

At the time of his death, Kwach was hosting the evening Drive show on Spice FM.

Here are five interesting and lesser-known facts about the fallen broadcaster.

Kwach’s voice was his signature, and it’s what made him one of the most recognisable broadcasters in the country.

With a booming baritone, refined diction, and magnetic charisma, he stood out wherever he went on air.

His radio journey took him through some of Kenya’s most prestigious stations: Capital FM, Kiss FM, EA FM, Nation FM, Homeboyz Radio, Urban Radio in Kisumu, and most recently, Spice FM.

Listeners adored him for his humour, depth, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

Despite his fame in the media, Kwach initially had his sights set on law.

As the son of the late Justice Richard Otieno Kwach, a revered former Court of Appeal judge, it seemed natural for him to follow in his father’s legal footsteps.

He enrolled at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa, where he graduated with a BA in Law in the Class of 1995.

However, the call of radio broadcasting proved louder than the courtroom gavel. His pivot to broadcasting in the early 2000s showed that he was willing to forge his path, and his decision would eventually inspire a generation of young radio talents.

Kwach was known for keeping his personal life away from the limelight, a rare trait in an industry filled with celebrity personalities.

However, he made headlines in 2014 when he got engaged to his then-longtime partner, Dee, a former model.

The engagement was celebrated widely, but the couple later parted ways, and Kwach remained relatively silent about his love life thereafter.

Kwach was only 52 years old when he died, a sobering reminder that he still had much to offer both professionally and personally.

Those who knew him say he was just beginning a new chapter in his life, exploring fresh ideas for media innovation and mentorship. His passing at such a young age leaves a gap that will be hard to fill.

One of the most defining traits of Edward Kwach was his willingness to take risks, both personally and professionally.

In 2016, despite being a well-established name in Nairobi’s media circles, Kwach made the bold decision to move to Kisumu to help launch Urban Radio.

At the time, it was an unconventional move; Nairobi was (and still is) considered the heartbeat of Kenya’s broadcasting industry.

But Kwach’s belief in the power of storytelling and community radio pushed him to venture into new territories.

In Kisumu, he mentored young talent, grew a loyal listenership, and demonstrated that greatness doesn’t need to be confined to one city.

Earlier, Hot 96 presenter Nick Odhiambo paid a heartfelt tribute to Kwach, revealing they were first cousins.

He credited Kwach for inspiring his own journey into radio.

He also described their relationship as both supportive and competitive, especially when it came to landing voiceover gigs.
