Ayua Secondary Commercial School in Uzairue, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State is in a state of complete neglect, despite its location near the homes of influential political figures such as former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
A civic technology platform, Monitng, raised the alarm in an open letter addressed to Governor Monday Okpebholo and his deputy, Idahosa Dennis, urging immediate intervention in the deteriorating school.
The group said the school’s condition reflects years of abandonment, even as huge sums were allocated to the education sector in previous administrations.
It said, “Our team visited Ayua Secondary Commercial School in Uzairue, Etsako West LGA, Edo State. It is a clear example of the chronic neglect facing public schools. Classrooms are in total disrepair, furniture is broken or missing, and the environment is unsafe for any meaningful learning to take place.
“This school is just a stone’s throw from the home of former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and lies within the constituency of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor. Yet, it has been completely abandoned. No meaningful intervention. No renovation. No political will to change its condition.
“The school’s principal expressed deep frustration. Most of the classrooms are either collapsing or unusable due to cracked walls and leaking roofs. Students sit on broken chairs or bare floors. For years, the staff have been pleading for help, but their voices have gone unheard.
“Despite the billions allocated to the education sector during the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki, donor-backed programmes like EdoBEST schools, like Ayua, have been left behind. While resources were spent on policies and publicity, students in Uzairue continued to suffer in silence.”
The group urged the state governor to do something about the situation, saying, “Monday, the people of Etsako West are watching. Ayua Secondary Commercial School urgently needs full renovation. Our children deserve safe, functional schools, not abandoned buildings. It’s time to act.”
