Edo deputy speaker Maria Oligbi-Edeko resigns as APC takes over assembly

Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Maria Oligbi-Edeko, has resigned from her position, citing her dedication to justice, equity, and democratic principles.

Oligbi-Edeko, who represents Esan Northeast II constituency, announced her resignation during Monday’s plenary session in Benin. She had served as deputy speaker since June 16, 2023. Her decision follows the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) loss of its majority status in the 24-member 8th Assembly.

The PDP initially held 15 seats after the 2023 general elections. However, recent defections have shifted the balance of power, granting the All Progressives Congress (APC) a commanding majority with 18 members, leaving the PDP with just six.

Following Oligbi-Edeko’s resignation, Osamwonyi Atu of the APC, representing Orhionmwon East constituency, was elected as the new deputy speaker.

Addressing her decision, Oligbi-Edeko explained that it was made after extensive consultations with her constituents and was motivated by a desire to uphold constitutional values and the trust placed in her by the public.

“We’re at a political crossroads in Edo and Nigeria. I choose to act with honour, integrity, and responsibility,” she said.

She reaffirmed her commitment to the PDP and rejected defection, despite political pressure.

“As a law teacher and rule-of-law advocate, I cannot justify defection. My principles won’t allow me to follow that path, even if others do,” she added.

Oligbi-Edeko highlighted the gender imbalance created by her resignation, urging the assembly leadership to address the disparity to preserve diverse perspectives in governance.

“My exit leaves a gap in women’s representation. I urge the leadership to fix this disparity to preserve inclusion and diverse perspectives in governance,” she said.

Reflecting on her tenure, Oligbi-Edeko described her journey as fulfilling, guided by a commitment to due process and ethical leadership. She expressed gratitude to her constituents, colleagues, and party leaders for their support.

“I want peace in life and in death, with honour preserved beyond the grave,” she concluded.

Her resignation marks a significant shift in the political dynamics of the Edo State House of Assembly, as the APC consolidates its majority.

Speaker Blessing Agbebaku defected from the PDP to the APC earlier in the month.
